Blooming of the Lillies

The sight and smell of the flowers growing all over the grounds of Chautauqua Institution remind me of the new births at Springtime and the celebration of life during Easter.

SNAPSHOT/ the taste of planet earth 2098 a journal page left abandoned ripped from a book or perhaps spit from some detailed daily account where thought and event were scrolled, captured in verse by something or someone wracked with pain and the virus dreaded by many. under beans of crescent moon, words and echoes become somewhat visible, able to now articulate the stench of how death crawled from street to curb to home. old and weathered like a stormy sky phrases circle from a sudden wind push from insipid hands, make attempts to share sentences. notice how blue ink fades continuously, as virus grow across the lines spread to browned grasses and concrete staining it with human and animal blood continuously it gnaws through bodies embeds into limbs and skin. there is the evidence of a world war, seizures, disease, screaming voices and misplaced limbs left in a trail of vaporized earth remnants of millions spread side to side as more and more infection paints this page and everyone who touches it becomes its host feel how the page rests in obscurity. waits for a response, for someone to read between ignored lines and taste the aftermath of final war. to gaze upon this snapshot, retell this sight repulsive and alarming. because forgetting it will taste so much worse

Watching the children run and play hearing soft voices seems miles away, looking toward the garden spot at the smiling little faces planting their seeds as they themselves blooming like lilies in the valley.

Reflected in her eyes, The dying sky as white lilies go up in flames, Iridescence playing on her heart, She falls asleep with whispers, Caressed by breathless plains

Soft as whisper, tender as sigh, At tips of toes a-creeping Where fields of buds yet sleeping In dreamless, stillness, drifting nigh Ebbs and flows like lingering scent Teasing thoughts but half-remembered Breathes half-caught, dreams untendered Formless shadow, skyward bent Nothing pains for naught can shame Such unconstrained, pure spirit free Untouched, untethered, simply be Soul untamed, unfettered flame

Walls of brick and iron do shade a bit of grass. Though ample water at the 12 o'clock gives sheltered trees a limitless drink.

Water rolls like one sound wave Round and fast in endless movement One breaks, falls away No judgment just smoothment. One wave into the next Gently meets the shore Under the bell tower Waiting its turn to chime in Becoming one sound wave.

That first moment when we emerge from the Athenaeum Hotel and are truly present in Chautauqua. Our minds and ourselves, released from the ordinary, surrender to the enchantment of Chautauqua.

Chautauquan literary ground is home to efflorescence. May’s lilies transcend pandemic, yield Pomegranate’s invocation of Palestine.

Dear Palestine Park, you are really looking sharp this summer, mowed up and cared for by the hands that keep this land carefully compliant. Who will tell your stories now?
