I pledge allegiance to the artist that is nature I pledge my beingness to the blue kingfisher that sits on a branch before a pond waiting and watching like a poet looking for something to write on. He knows the men who throw nets weighed down with shells at the edges and then pull it up to fill their baskets with sparse fish for supper He knows too the snakes that snake through the surface, the cranes that disappear behind leaves, their spindly legs perfectly mistakable as stalks of watery leaves, the goats that graze on the bank beside the braids of trees that touch down to the water like Narcissus bending his head down to stare at his green image. He knows the spa routine of the ducks that ride the pond like trains and collect together at an end where they bob up and down with the little ripples borrowed from oceans and duck under the water, rise up, shake their heads and gobble up insects And when it is time for the dabblers to chain back to the banks and wade up the steps towards home, he turns his head to me ‘I am you,’ he says and he tells me all that he knows of poetry

Always learning, Always discovering, Always finding. I pledge allegience to wishing and hoping and reaching. I vow to care for and about the trees and the flowers and the bees and the fish. I vow to be amazed by the shapes the clouds take one and the shapes this natural earth makes. I vow all of these things because if I dont, there will be no earth for me to live on. There will be no bees for me to run from, no spiders for me to be afraid of, no dandelions waiting for a puff of air from my lungs. There will be no birds chirping, no trees taking root, no snakes slithering through the underbrush, nothing for those non existant snakes to hunt. There will be nothing natural and that is when people will finally see their mistake. That is when they will beg for help. When it is too late. So I vow to help before there is nothing left.

Gary held me up on my way upstream to the end of my journey, his legs, obstreperous tree trunks blocking the way. I had to bite him on the ankle and he jumped but his poem was strong, undeterred. As was I. Good guy that he is, he wished me well indeed on my quest for the headwaters.
