Some days I/you...

Some days I know it's time to go But sense I have a lot to repay - I owe Too old for 12hr shifts with 30000 in step My knees & back lacks the pep For 50 years I have been a nurse Mostly with love sometimes a curse One thing I know for sure a nurse is who I am - As I began at 18 and now I am a "Mam" It's time for me to give back to the nursing core So now I teach and open up the nursing door.

Some days are like...

Some days are like A thunderstorm, growing, swirling, off in the distance until – crash – it’s here. Some days are like A tiny caterpillar hiding under the leaf he was born on, afraid, frozen in his tracks, not knowing that on another day, he will burst forth with beautiful wings to carry him off. Some days are like The sun drifting through shards of colored glass, tough but lovely.

Some days I/you...

Some days you'll break into tears/ while the National Anthem/ plays in the background/ and you'll have to call the crisis line again/ Some days you'll listen to strangers ask/ through a phone line/ if you're anywhere near traffic/ Some days you'll enter the hospital/ convinced you're dying/ have nurses take your blood pressure/ and tell you to breathe But one day you'll be able to take off your mask/ and breathe like normal/ and hold your mother/ and finally thank the nurse/ who handed you a tissue/ and wiped your eyes when you couldn't

Some days I/you...

Some days, the leaping water lilies will grow/ and other days, the green circle will become blue./ Under water, there is no light,/ no plant to live but there is water/ and there is room to reach the surface.

Some days I/you...

Some days you will hulk out / in red cheeks, your fists tight / like bunches— your hands are bouquets / give out your anger, your voice / a stem for me to listen to; / when Hulk hulks, he branches / back into Bruce Banner.

Some days I/you...

Some days your patient cries…they want to go home. You listen, and sympathize. You encourage their spirit, then you walk away and ball your eyes out. You need encouragement too.

Together we...

make a difference even on the tough days. Even on the days when we think all we did was make mistakes. Stepping up to help a co-worker with a task because they are over burdened, stopping what you are doing to just listen to someones story, or just offer a smile as encouragement. Together we are a team and we make a difference. To each other, our patients, and our families.

Some days I/you...

Some days, you will feel that you made a difference, that a breakthrough happened, that you did it. Other days, you will be broken, from carrying all the pain and suffering of the world. But every day, you will become better. A better clinican, and a better human.

Andrea Teubel

Some days I/you...

Some days you feel your heart break, but knowing it breaks open and not closed, you fill yourself with the compassionate need to care and heal

Sondra J Kahler, RN
Boise, Idaho

Some days I/you...

Some days you stand at the border between life and death and accept life into the world. Other days, you release life back across that narrow divide. It's just one breath wide. Then there are times--endless hours, days, months, even years-- when you struggle and suffer an illness right along with the patient and their family. These times seems interminable, but The Work transforms you there at the river's edge. Your role is to help people complete their important life tasks. Those tasks take as long as they take. You may never understand the task or its purpose, but your flesh, heart and soul merge into a shimmering spirit vessel that renders compassionate service, though Self Care is absolutely required. As you acclimate into the role, you experience the luminosity of people and feel the supporting spirits that accompany them through their struggles and transitions. Holy takes on a whole new meaning. This awareness of the sanctity of life makes being a nurse a privilege.

Together we...

Find our inspiration / A color shielding hope / A pony’s mane / Don’t assume or call for help from another hue / In these moments, it’s just blue / A jazz tune / A monsoon of emotions and commotion / Galloping towards the tides / A herd of wild Corolla / Stampeding past a shadow which eyes us / This time the youth will guide us / Towards the blue / And into waves crashing / While we’re asking for salvation and patience for the healers, who wear blue / To protect you / And you, too, will become healthy and reborn in blue / Not pale blue / Like the old guitarist painted by Picasso, but the Moon Blue sung by Wonder / Or the Blue Abstraction by O’Keefe / Offering flowers for the living, and easy breathing / Each blue piece hold true / Lift up for from sorrow / You are a boron blue diamond / Shining from a vault / Or the bioluminescence from Waitomo / Glowing from the labyrinth / So that you can look up (Look Up!) and transform / Into Leoncino / And ride your pony into your YOUniverse.

Together we...

Together we could overcome any racial injustices, if we are properly educated on the truth of the human race’s lineage and DNA. To oppress a human based on race is to tear apart your own kind. The late Toni Morrison states in her novel “The Bluest Eye”, Quiet as it’s kept. America can no longer afford to turn a blind eye to the secrets lingering in its core and history.
