Why Florence

responses

Because Florence changed me

Because Florence changed me. Getting lost among the streets of the city, I found my place in the world. Immersing myself in the beauty of the Italian way of life, I found beauty within me.

The city

The crisp morning breeze strolling around Mercato di Sant'Ambrogio. The sweet smell of fresh produce and the vibrancy of flowers in bloom. The kindhearted exchanges between fellow locals and eager explorers proceeding the start of the day.

To ask questions and find answers

Have you heard the gentle rumble of a native laugh as you stumble over words said with much thought. Have you been guided while asking for a small cup of almond gelato by kind eyes and a warm heart? ... Have you felt the warmth of the light on your skin as you stop to look for the way. Have you walked with not a place in mind, but of need to see more? ... Have you stumbled across the narrow paths to investigate a small window where you are able to peer into the depths of years worth of trinkets and magazines from the 50s and 60s. Have you been lulled into dancing while the sweet sounds of piano played by the city’s history sway around you? ... Have you seen the gentle glow of the lights spark up as the sun meanders down the sky. Have you looked up the sleepy rolling of lights reflected upon a sweep of the Arno?

The city

an apartment kitchen table covered in /  scratches and spaghetti we cooked in a /  steamy haze of independence and jarred /  sauce, open windows. heart-shaped pizza /  perched on the edge of a bridge, fearless, /  loneliness breaking on the edge of the shore / and the glittering ponte vecchio punctuating / the dark. a walk beneath the candy-colored / cathedral, with a bottle of wine and bunch of / flowers we bought at a tabaccheria down the / street; a bench to watch the tourists and the / artists brushing watercolors over paper, in the / same  palate as our bouquet and the sun as it / sinks out of sight, behind the towering dome.

Because Florence changed me

In the age old city On the cobble stone streets, under the Tuscan sun Because family and food is home Where Architecture is born Art brings culture and culture brings life. Liveliness in conversation where no mountain may part a community A land of peoples connected by love. Because love of life is what exists here, a life full of love.

Because Florence changed me

Because Florence changed me, I see the world through a new lense, A lifetime of memories I carry close to my heart, The buzz filling the markets each morning, My thirst for adventure temporarily quenched, Because the city once unfamiliar to me became my home

Tuscany and nature

Because when the raindrops are left on the leaves the winery glistens as the sun turns in for the day. / Because the sky holds every color / and you hear the sounds of water hitting the ground / and the mountains take your breath away. / Because for a fleeting moment, you are living in a dream.

The city

The beauty and grace in every plaza/The hustle and bussle of the tourists and locals throughout the day/Surprisingly the loud, never ending sound of the ambulances would easily remind me of all aspects of my home away from home.

The classroom

Because I miss the Palazzo Vettori. Because the Renaissance and rustication masonry at the corner of Via Cavour and Via Alfani. Because the quiet library and Tuscan sun spilling through the eighteenth-century courtyard whose new leaves and ancient stones will rustle again under our feet.

Tuscany and nature

Because of the quiet walks through the vineyards. Because of the ancient fragrance of the Italian Cypruses. Because the Arno connects me still to Monte Falterona and the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Because Florence changed me

Because Florence changed me: the songs of the city sparrows, the last sip of cappucchino before classes, the chaotic joy of weekend discotheques. Because I am part of the story of the city now, but it's an unfinished story.

The classroom

Because I miss meeting my friends in the quiet courtyard at Palazzo Vettori. Because I started dreaming of Dante, thinking in terza rima.

The food

The first truffles of late spring toppling plates of linguine.

Jessica

The city

The hard echo of morning church bells. The whir of street sweepers. The slow dripping from balconies and freshly watered potted flowers.
